What a tragic life. The man who would become James I was taken from his mother and raised by Protestants. Actually, James' mother, Mary, Queen of Scots had a miserable existence too. Both lives speak to the difficult lives people lived in response to the overbearing control of religion at that time.

James was a real enigma; he seems to have been a homosexual with a powerful intellect. He could debate the Bible and religion for hours. Probably the most valuable thing he did was oversee the rewriting of the Bible; it is still used today.

James wasn't a particularly good ruler for Scotland or England. The Kirk of Scotland and the Protestants of England tried to rule things instead of James. What a miserable time for everyone.
