The story is wonderful, of course - a story encompassing the struggle between race, culture, and family from the perspective of a young girl growing up in the South during the 1930's. I had a hard time getting into Sissy Spacek's narration. It was slow and drawling, but by the end of the book I actually liked it.

Reading classics is not something I want to spend my free time reading, I don't have the patience. On a recent trip to the library, I found the audio CD on the shelves and decided to give it a try. I almost quit by the end of the second disc, but persevered, because it's a classic and because Sissy Spacek's narration was stellar. I can now understand all the hype about the book. I absolutely loved it and think I want to see the movie so that I can see all of the characters brought to life.
Classic! Great story!
