Dark, dreary, slow. So slow, and seemingly pointless, filled with unlikable people, that I quit half way. Might have picked up. I will never know.
Let me start out by saying this story was very well written. It's a dark story of murder that will have you pondering on every page. Revenge is the goal.
In the winter of 1897, a midwife Elspeth Howell, arrives at her isolated farmstead to discover an unthinkable crime. Her 12 year old son the only survivor, who then after sometime of mourning, helps his mother plan it's reprisal. The previous reviewer found the story slow and boring. I can see where some might. I found myself living in the era of the 1800's and enjoying the book emensely. Life was hard during that era and murder was handled differently. This author was new for me and his style is deep and smooth. As a change of genre for me I enjoyed this read.

I loved this book, it has intrigue, murder, adventure. The characters are well written, and you can feel their fears and their lack of confidence in what they're doing. Set at a time when people still took matters into their own hands without consequence, it has a rough, raw feel. I couldn't put it down and cried when I finished. A great read.
