Karl Larsen (born September 25, 1968) is an American photographer who is responsible for the picture of Paris Hilton in the back of a patrol car in June 2007. The shot of Hilton crying in a patrol car was shown on '20/20' but was wrongly credited to Nick Ut, who took a similar photo and is known for his shot of a napalm victim in Vietnam. Karl Larsen initiated a lawsuit against ABC, Inc. in January 2009 based on the '20/20' story.
Larsen was born in Brooklyn, New York, however, considers upstate Woodstock, New York his hometown. The son of Thor and Arlene Larsen, his father an immigrant from Stavanger, Norway and his mother of Italian-American descent. He is the oldest of two children. He graduated with a B.S. from State University of New York Binghamton in 1991.
Larsen started his professional career in 1997 by being the house photographer for the House of Blues in West Hollywood. Larsen would also shoot his friends in bands such as The Start and Stargunn on the Sunset Strip.
Rolling Stone magazine
Larsen has been a contributing photographer for Rolling Stone magazine since 2002. Doing portraits of bands from The Doors of the 21st Century to Velvet Revolver. However, Larsen, is best known for his live concert contributions by being sent on assignments from nationwide to Europe to Canada and to Japan from Farm Aid and to the world's largest concert ever, The Rolling Stones on the Copacabana Beach in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil in 2006.
Larsen married his next door neighbor Brazilian native Anelize Ferrer Flores on June 25, 2005 in Flores's hometown of Porto Alegre, Brazil. They met in West Hollywood, California in 1999. They returned to Brazil in November 2006 to have a traditional Catholic wedding ceremony at Porto Alegre's famous Sao Jose Church. They currently live in Hollywood, California
