I have been a fan of Scalzi since OLD MAN'S WAR (which I still think is his best). I was disappointed in this one. It's entertaining but somewhat silly. I find it hard to believe that evolution can mix a biological system with a nuclear reactor? I was also frequently annoyed by the one character who was never given a gender but always referred to as they. Everyone else in the book was him or her. It makes for clunky sentences to refer to one as "they". This doesn't come close to the OLD MAN'S WAR series. It's just okay.

This book took all the things I like in a story and put it together... great characters, fun and adventure, and a tale that you won't forget. On top of all that, there was humor, there was camaraderie and big freaking giant creatures! This was so much fun. All I wanted to do was put life on hold and read. I love when a book does that.

If one can suspend belief and then believe in parallel worlds/universes then this is a very enjoyable read. It's well written with a semi-believable plot. Like other Scalzi works, it's a bit off beat. It has humor, action, pathos, and redemption. It kept my interest.
