Kagssagssuk : The Legend of the Orphan Boy (Dual Language Greenlandic-English)
Kagssagssuk The Legend of the Orphan Boy - Dual Language Greenlandic-English Author:Knud Rasmussen (Recorder), Jakob Danielsen (Illustrator) This is the Legend of Kâgssagssuk, the Orphan, as recorded by the ethnologist Knud Rasmussen and illustrated by the Greenland hunter Jakob Danielsen, and presented here in a Greenlandic Eskimo language with English translation on facing pages. — The legend is one of the most widely diffused of old Eskimo legends. It is still known from Angmagssal... more »ik, Greenland, in the east to Alaska in the west. It has a robust moral, saying that, true, an orphan, however, little, is to be considered a servant who must be useful in the house to which he or she is admitted, but on the other hand and person who neglects the child, or even does it harm out of sheer malice, may come to a bad end if, in spite of ill-treatment, the orphan grows up to be a strong and vigorous man.
The version of the legend in this volume is only slightly different from the one in which Knud Rasmussen, on the Danish Literary Greenland Expedition, 1902-04, took down while listening to the narrator Jakuaraq at Godthaab.
This version is rendered by the Greenlander Jakob as he remembered it told in his native Island of Disko, and is beautifully illustrated by him.« less
