I absolutely adored this book...From the cover: Here is the classic-and true story of Vyry: the child of a white plantation owner and his black mistress, a southern Civil War herorine to rival Scarlett O'Hara. Vyry bears witness to the South's antebellum opulence and to its brutality, its wartime ruin, and the promises of Reconstruction.

True civil war story from the point of view of a slave who can pass for white.

Totally amazing story, even more so when one realizes that it is a fictionalized account of the author's great-grandmother's experiences growing up as a slave in Georgia. Wonderful writing. A book you can totally get your teeth into!

I just finished reading this book and was actually sad that I was done. This book leaves you missing the main Character Vyry and wondering about the rest of her life. Great book.

When I was in High School, I read "Gone with the Wind" for the first time and loved it. I did not think about how the Slaves were portrayed - It was simply a love story to me. Since then, I have read it many times and each time have a new perspective. Two or three readings ago, I questioned the portrayal of slaves and slavery. "Jubilee" has given me a new perspective. It is also well written. I recommend it.

The book provides a look at the Civil War from the viewpoint of the slaves and free blacks. Set in Georgia, it is a different view of the war and the chaos created by both sides.
