Totally amazing story, even more so when one realizes that it is a fictionalized account of the author's great-grandmother's experiences growing up as a slave in Georgia. Wonderful writing. A book you can totally get your teeth into!
I just finished reading this book and was actually sad that I was done. This book leaves you missing the main Character Vyry and wondering about the rest of her life. Great book.
When I was in High School, I read "Gone with the Wind" for the first time and loved it. I did not think about how the Slaves were portrayed - It was simply a love story to me. Since then, I have read it many times and each time have a new perspective. Two or three readings ago, I questioned the portrayal of slaves and slavery. "Jubilee" has given me a new perspective. It is also well written. I recommend it.
The book provides a look at the Civil War from the viewpoint of the slaves and free blacks. Set in Georgia, it is a different view of the war and the chaos created by both sides.
