Wonderful, absolutely charming book.... This book is written by the same author as A Tree Grows in Brooklyn and is just as good...
The story follows a very young couple and their first year of married life in the late 1920's.
He at university attempting to get a law degree and she as a very young wife learning the ways of the world..

If you've read Betty Smith you know that she's one of the best female authors of her time, hands down. This book set in 1927 in Brooklyn and then the mid-west gives great insight into life at the time and the hardships of young love and little money.

By the author of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. This one takes the girl and boy out of the city and shows how determination succeeds.

Dated, but still sweet and charming.

Betty Smith's works are all timeless. Although she is best known as the author of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, all four of her books are delightful and well-worth reading.

This is a very sweet story to read. The story of newlyweds, Annie and Carl. Carl is going to law school while they endure poverty and Annie's pregnancy.

I first read this book when I was 9 years old and loved it. Annie an 18 year old girl falls in love with Carl a law student and moves to the Midwest to marry him.She has to work but she learns to dress like a coed in skirts and sweaters and finds out that she can audit classes for free. Just as she is getting used to marriage Annie finds out that she is pregnant and how in their skeleton budget will they afford a baby. It all works out until Carl graduates from law school with Annie and their baby present. This story was written in 1929, but it is still a classic for today 85 years later. It is an excellent book.
