Before starting this book, I had no knowledge of Joseph Bazalgette.  What an amazing man; although he was wealthy, he made things better for the common man, as well as everyone else.  Bazalgette created bridges, roads, embankments, sewer systems and he designed many of the green urban areas and parks throughout London.  Even before people understood the need for green spaces in an urban environment, Bazalgette designed them.

Sir Joseph Bazalgette was a British engineer who designed and built a system of sewers and pumping stations that transformed the Thames River in the mid-1800s.  He made traffic move better by the revamping and constructing bridges throughout the London-area.  It speaks to Bazalgette's brilliance that all his bridges survive to this day.

In conclusion, the author states that the Embankments and the London sewer construction projects were the two largest civil engineering projects of the century.  The amazing thing is that they were completed by one man -- Joseph Bazalgette.

The only thing that would have made this excellent story better would have been some drawings or photos of the Victoria Embankment or some of the other innovations that Bazalgette created.
