John Sims Townsend (born 1956, Wilson, North Carolina) is a clinical psychologist with broad experience in private practice, leadership consulting, and media. He is perhaps best known for his million-selling Boundaries: When to Say Yes, When to Say No to Take Control of Your Life, cowritten with Henry Cloud. Dr. Townsend has written or co-written over twenty books. His most recent book is "Where is God?" (Thomas Nelson, 2009). Dr. Townsend has appeared on national TV, radio and newspapers and co-hosts the nationally syndicated radio program New Life Live.

Dr. Townsend co-leads Cloud-Townsend Resources and runs a private practice with his partner, Henry Cloud in Newport Beach, California. He serves on the board of Mustard Seed Ranch and has served on the boards of the India Gospel League and Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS).
Dr. Townsend's hobbies include music and playing in a band.
Dr. Townsend has a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology with honours from North Carolina State University, a Master of Theology degree from Dallas Theological Seminary (also with honors) and a PhD degree in clinical psychology from Biola University.
