I am about half through this book and enjoying it immensely.
Audubon was a remarkable individual living during one of the most
interesting times in American history, Revolution and the great age of
exploration that followed.
His passion for drawing birds was deeply ingrained and he maintained
this passion throughout his life. Early on, he drew for the
satisfaction only, or from obsession, it was a long time before his
works were published.
His energy exceeded the abounding energy of the new America. He applied
himself to many endeavors, was a successful businessman until the
fateful period of 1819 when he, like others, lost everything. Failure
plunged him more deeply into art, earning a living for a while as a
portrait artist, and renewed energy for bird drawings/paintings.
The writing of Richard Rhodes, winner of the Pulitzer Prize, is
excellent. He includes lots of journal entries from Audubon and pieces
of letters.
When I finish the book I will return here to include some quotes.
