reviewed John Hartford: Pilot of a Steam Powered Aereo-Plain (with a 14-track, never-before-released CD of John Hartford live) on
Noted music writer Andrew Vaughn's take on bluegrass/newgrass legend John Hartford is a must-read (and must-see) book filled with insights about John's life and career, along with many never-before-published photos from the archives his family members have painstakingly cataloged and preserved. I learned much about John, his background, the path that led him to stardom with "Gentle On My Mind", and his quirky, multi-talented music pursuits. As a bonus, the live Ryman concert CD included with the book is a special treat featuring John, Vassar Clements, Tut Taylor and Tony Rice. Fans of John -- or simply fans of larger-than-life music personalities in general -- should add this book to their library.
