John Cabot The Discoverer Of NorthAmerica And Sebastian His Son A Chapter Of The Maritime History Of England Under The Tudors 14961557 Author:Henry Harrisse John Cabot, the discoverer of North-America and Sebastian, his son; a chapter of the maritime history of England under the Tudors, 1496-1557 - INTRODUCTION - On ne duit aux aiuvls yue La vtritL IN the year I 497, a Venetian citizen, called Giovarlni Caboto, having obtained letters-patent from Henry V1 I. the year previous for a voyage of discove... more »ry, crossed the Atlantic Ocean, and, under the British flag, discovered the continent of North America. In 1498, he fitted out in Bristol a new expedition, and again saiIed westward but scarcely anything further is known of that enterprise. Caboto had a son named Sebastian, born in Venice, who lived in England not less than sixteen years, and then removed to Spain, where in I 5 I 8 Charles V. appointed him Pilot-Major. This office he held for thirty years. In I 526, Sebastian was authorized to take cornmand of a Spanish expedition intended for Tharsis and Ophir, but which, instead, went to La Plata, and proved disastrous. After his return to Seville, 11e was invited, it1 1 547, by the counsellors of Edw rd VI. to England, and again settled in that country. Seven years afterwards, he prepared the expeditions of Willoughby and Cl ancelor, and of Stephell Burrough, i l l search of a North-East Passage to Cathay. He finally died in London, after I 55 7, at a very advanced age, in complete obscurity. He is now held by many to have been one of the greatest navigators and cosmographers that ever lived, nay, the author of the maritime strength. of Ei glancl who opened the way to those improveinents which have rendered the English so great, so emincnt, so flourishing a people. To set forth a true history of these two nlen, based exclusively upon authentic documents, is the object of the following pages. - CONTENTS - IAIIT I . CiIAl. P GE I.
