Jem
Author: Frederik Pohl
There were too many people and too few resources on Earth. The old alliances had crumbled, and three global alignments now coexisted uneasily. Then, in a nearby star system, the Earthlike planet Jem was discovered. Its untapped resources might bring a renaissance to Earth--or bring on the final apocalypse.

Rarely have I read such an apallingly negative view of humanity... that's not a bad thing, but nevertheless, I didn't love the book. It's probably the most interesting work by Pohl I've yet read, however.

Very well written, wonderful characters, terrific plot. Frederick Pohl is a master.

The discovery of another habitable world might spell salvation to the three bitterly competing power blocs of the resource-starved 21st century; but when their representatives arrive on Jem, with its multiple intelligent species, they discover instead the perfect situation into which to export their rivalries.

This is much darker than most of Frederik Pohl's other works, and I can't quite say I liked it. Too grim for me, even though well written.

From inside cover: In the time when there are no nations on Earth, only mutually hostile power blocs, suddenly a new inhabited planet is discovered. JEM

If you like the style of Asimov or Pohl, you'll enjoy this masterpiece. It was the winner of the Hugo and Nebula Awards.
