In 1804 President Jefferson set out to edit the Gospels in order to uncover the essence of true religion in the simple story of Jesus. Jefferson was convinced that the authentic message of Jesus could be found only by extracting Jesus' message of absolute love and service from the more miraculous aspects of the story (annunciation, virgin birth or resurrection)This little book is the remarkable result of Jefferson's efforts.

I find it interesting that one of the founding fathers of our nation found it imperative that all people be treated as equals. He was also supposed to be "enlightened". At one time he owned up to 600 slaves. Even at the time of his death, he owned 200,but still did not proclaim them free at his death like so many of his colleagues had. This man then had the arrogance to rewrite a part of the Bible as it suited his needs. As a common sense thinker, I am grateful that I did not live in this era.
