Isola by Allegra Goodman is based in the history of Marguerite de La Rocque, who lived in the 1500s. The tells a compelling story of a young woman's fight for survival and of her evolution from a pampered child to a strong survivor. I feel for the young, orphaned child and cheer for the woman who faces her dire circumstances and survives. Based on the fiction, I learn a history I might never otherwise have encountered.

i first found allegra goodman reading kaaterskill falls in 1999. none of her books since disappoint.
isola is no exception. it is beautifully written and narrated. a sweeping historical fiction account of a brave young woman in the mid 1500's as she navigates a pre-women's lib world. there is a stark beauty to this work, not only in the character herself but in her time spent on the oceans and on a small granite island off of the st lawrence river and canada. read this book. it is lovely and inspiring.
