Wonderful novel dealing with issues of race, slavery, and basic morality in what is now Haiti and New Orleans from about 1770 to 1810. I think this is the first novel I have read that tells some of the history of the slave rebellions on the French colony of Saint-Domingue and how it came to be Haiti. This novel gave some very interesting history as well as telling a great story. The story really shows the destructiveness of slavery and how it negatively impacted families and societies in general. The characters in this book were very well portrayed and the book was obviously very well-researched. I would give this one a high recommendation.
