I used to teach Greek mythology to adults, and also a course called Path of the Heroine, which focused on female heroines in mythology.........and my favorite stories were those of Iphigenia, portrayed in the plays Iphigenia and the lesser known but even more important sequel, Iphigenia in Aulis. This is one of the most beautiful and readable translations - suitable for performance - and I only let go of it because I have every translation in print of the book, and must start downsizing my immense library. The Iphigenia raises so many important questions - Can sacrificing one's life be an act of integrity, or is does one labor under delusions in doing so? To what an extent is a female (nor or then) bound to serve the patriarchy, and how can she break free of convention and still have a place in her society? After reading Iphigenia in Aulis, read about Iphigenia's "resurrection" in Iphigenia in Tauris........ the most inspiring portrayal of a female heroine in myth that I have ever encountered.
