If you only read one book on discourse analysis, this is the one to read. James Paul Gee reveals discourse analysis as a lot more than just linguistic study. Presenting this information on an introductory level, the author assumes that the reader has no prior knowledge of linguistics. The basics presented include theory of language-in-use, as well as a method of research. Particularly fascinating to me was the way the author's method is made up of a set of "tools of inquiry" and the strategies for using them. I learned how to keep from getting physically, socially, culturally, and morally "bitten" by the world.
