Here this wonderful series begins. Did a doctor in the neighborhood die of poisoned mushrooms then rush to try to cure himself, but too late? Or is that the way he died at all. And of course as in any English village there is more speculation and gossip than you can shake a stick at. But Mrs. Jeffries and her "team" are more than a match to find out what really happened here, and to pass along tips and information to the Inspector. They bring to a new high the concept that you can make someone love your idea and make him think the idea was his all the time. Super cozy!

This is the first of a delightful series featuring Inspector Witherspoon of Scotland Yard and Hezbipah Jeffries, his housekeeper. The Inspector is not exactly the best at detecting but his household staff are and they do so on the sly. In this book, a much-hated doctor is found murdered in his study and what seems like a poisoning by deadly mushrooms is the first of many wrong assumptions. I love the characters of this cozy mystery and can hardly wait to read more of them.

I enjoy the down to earth qualities of the characters. It's quick reading and for me a good writer is one that doen't have blood and gore and can keep me reading and not wanting to put the book down till I get to the end. The authors of the Mrs. Jeffries series aren't Agatha Christie- whose whole mystery collection I have- including Hound of Death-never published in the US. and I continue to re-read her, but I need new stimulation of the brain cells and this series does it for me.

I would love to sit and chat and have a "cuppa" with the delightful characters in the Inspector's household...We meet Mrs. Jeffries, housekeeper and behind the scenes murder solver and the rest of the staff who gather clues and feed them to Inspector Witherspoon, all without his knowledge, of course ...The characters are warm and believable...This is a wonderful start to a delightful cozy series....If you like light Victorian mysteries, you are sure to like the "Mrs. Jeffries" series ....

I love Victorian mysteries. Anne Perry and Victoria Thompson books are terrific. This one was just barely okay.
