Back of Book: Inspector Ganesh Ghote of the Bombay CID finds himself sent to a small provincial town, a setting that comes delightfully alive. Ghote's mandate is to investigate a death fifteen years earlier, but he has not simply to find a murderer. he is told to pin the crime squarely on the town boss, a figure of almost despotic power. Nor is this all. The local holy man has embarked on a fast-to-death against any investigation. So as this Swami sinks nearer his end, Ghote, in face of obstruction of every kind, attempts swifly to find his answer.
I say: I enjoy this series a great deal. Inspector Ghote is a very human character who yet manages to do the almost impossible. Clues abound, yet are skillfully hidden and side-tracked - a good mystery. Author H.R.F. Keating has written a wide variety of books - his empathy with this particular character is very apparent.
