I don't usually have time to sit down and read a book cover to cover, but I found myself wanting to do just that with this book. It's a light-hearted, not-corny romance, and the characters are likable. It was also a welcome respite from some of the heavier books I've been reading.

When 12-year-old Natalie Marx discovers that her family is refused reservations at an inn in Vermont because they are Jewish, she is confused, hurt, and angry. Natalie finds her way into the resort anyway, and so begins her life-long love/hate affair with the Inn at Lake Divine and its proprietors, the Berry family.

I really loved this book. It was so well written and the characters had a depth to them that I appreciated. The storyline itself was interesting, thought provoking and well-done.

I loved this book. Elinor Lipman is the best! She writes wonderful stories filled with great characters- delightful.

Someone must have suggested I read this book. It was cute, an interesting story taking place back in the 1960's. Two families, both running family style resorts, one in Vermont,one in NY. Reminded me of fun times I used to have when I went to these types of places with my parents.

i loved this book, i grew up jewish and never felt very religious, so marrying out of my faith was not a big deal, none of by siblings married jewish either.. anyway, this book was well written, a great story and i enjoyed it from start to end!
A quick read, but thought the development of the characters could have been better.

I really enjoyed this book. It kept my attention with great character development and a good plot.

Elinor Lipman recreates the world of the early '60s with the civil rights movement seen from the eyes of a young Jewish girl who is determined to attend a summer resort that might be anti-semitic. A good read with a great ending.

Elinor Lipman is GREAT. Very droll humor about young Jewish woman rejected for a stay at a Vermont inn because they "wouldn't feel comfortable". Of course things/stuff happens and she ends up falling for one one the in owner's sons.Great witty reading.
I read this book for an online reading group, and I found it very enjoyable. My first impression was that it was going to be like the '80s movie "Dirty Dancing" considering the setting and the background of the main character, but as I got into it, I found it to be so much more.

This is the first time reading a book by Elinor Lipman (recommended by my sister) and I really enjoyed it! Set in the anti-Semitic world of the genteel (and Gentile) world of the Inn at Lake Devine, Vermont, 14 year old Natalie Marx can't believe she is not welcome due to her being Jewish. She spends much of her life trying to penetrate this forbidden setting. Lots of funny prose poking fun of the foibles of the Jewish and goyish communities of the time, this book is satisfying and fun to read.
