I really enjoy the writing style of this author. Her characters are fully developed and the story kept me reading way past bedtime. However, I was pretty disappointed with the ending. It didn't wrap much of anything up for me. Not sure I would read another book by this author if it has another ending like this one. I almost felt like I wasted my time reading it.

In these Inspector Sejer mysteries, the characters - victims, perps, others - involved in the case tend to get more ink than do the detectives. Thus we get to know Gunder Jomann, who took a vacation in India with the goal of finding a wife - and succeeded. Unfortunately, a series of events leads to her death in her new country, Norway, before she even gets to the house of her new husband.

Inspector Sejer and colleague Skarre narrow down the time of her murder and discover several people who could have done it. Through careful investigating as well as an instinct about personalities, the two find their man.

Sejer comes across as compassionate, quiet, old-fashioned, and a bit of a loner. He is intelligent and thoughtful (in spite of his thinking that dogs "can't love") and determined. There are moments of humor intertwined with what is really a heart-breaking story.
