Igraine is a spunky little girl who has to defend her family's castle and magic books from an evil lord. She doesn't rely on magic, like her brother and parents do, but on her mind and her ingenuity.

I loved Igraine's spirit and how she defeated the bad guy with smarts. She's a great role model for young girls today. Because this is a fantasy, Funke is able to create her own world with its own rules, but Igraine still can be a heroine modern tween girls can relate to.
