Finally a survival story that praises a girl!

Summary:
Victoria is a dog sledder. She learned everything she knows about dog sledding from her father and she is continuing his legacy by building a successful team. As she is on a run, she comes across a boy that has been in an accident. From there, she needs to get him, her dogs, and herself to safety. This is no easy task as they are lost in the Alaskan wilderness during a blizzard. All of her father's teaching and her ingenuity is needed for all of them to survive.

My thoughts:
I'm a fan of survival stories and often keep Gary Paulsen books stacked on my shelf for other survivalist fans amongst my students. Unfortunately, they always seem to have a male protagonist. Finally, this is a quality story with a female heroine. She's brave, smart, and everything you can ask for in a strong female. Her decisions affect everyone and she cares just as much about her dogs as she does about the boy she comes across. Along with a beautifully written character, the story flies by. Each chapter is short and full to the brim with suspense. I'm just so excited that I finally have the girl version of a Paulsen adventure.
