Josh Goldin was savoring a Friday afternoon break in the coffee room, harmlessly flirting with coworkers while anticipating the weekend at home where his wife, Dori, waited with their eight-month-old son, Zack. And then Josh's secretary rushed in, using words like intensive care, lost consciousness, blood. . . . — That morning, Dori ha...  more »

This book was on my wish list for months, and I was so thrilled to finally have it in my hands. Unfortunately, it was terrible. I don't recommend it at all. The writing was so pretentious and dull; not to mention that the writer would lead up to an event, but then skip over the event and write about it in the past, after the fact. So annoying. If I hadn't waited for it so long, I wouldn't have even bothered finishing it. And the writer actually teaches writing at NYU!

I really like the premise of this book: does a mom have Munchausen by Proxy and is hurting her baby, or is a hospital to blame for a major oversight? But this book is painful to read. Honestly, I could not read any further than the end of part 1. With apologies to the writer, this subject is just out of my realm of comprehension. As the mother of a small child, I cannot bear to read about child abuse, hear about it on tv or see it in a movie.

I wanted to read this book; I wanted to like this book; I wanted this book to make me think. I wasn't prepared for how it made me feel.

The story of Dr. Stokes was interesting, and I might have continued reading just to see where it led. But in the end, I'm saying goodbye to this one, letting it move on to a new home, and hopefully to someone who enjoys it much more than I did.

I was really looking forward to this book, because I find the subject matter very interesting and the author had such a good 'resume', so to speak. However, I really disliked the writing style. There were pages and pages of back story that didn't seem to add anything to the overall plot...they felt like filler and were hard to read. It also seemed bizarre that the doctor would have jumped to a Munchausen's diagnosis after the first hospital visit, with no prior hospital visits or anything really to point to that.

I ended up doing what a previous reviewer did -- I started skimming the book, just to get the salient points and to find out what happened in the end. Oh well -- it wasn't terrible but it wasn't a fabulous read.

This book looked like it would be a really interesting read, however, I just could not get into it. Maybe it was the writing style, not sure, but I ended up skimming just because I wanted to find out what happened. I just didn't think it was any good, just my opinion though...

Just reading the description on the back made this book seem very intriguing to me, but I was disappointed that the pace was a little slow. It picked up towards the end and the ending was unsatisfying, but probably more realistic than what I would have wanted. I detested one of the characters but there really are people like that out there.
