The entire Inspector Rutledge series is great. Good, solid stories. Good characters and plots. Our inspector was highly affected by World War 1 but keeps fighting through the "shell shock" to get his life to some kind of normal and use his detective skills. Highly recommended!

To solve two murders committed in the Fens district, Ian Rutledge must conquer wartime nightmares and the ghostly appearance of his dead friend, Hamish, in his mind. With the second death, Scotland Yard sends Rutledge to investigate and solve the case quickly. However, the wandering trail of clues increases its complexity. Did the two victims know each other? Does the killer have a motive that links the deaths? Amid it all, Hamish, gives advice about the case.
The first murder is that of Hutchinson, an army captain, who is killed as he attends a wedding. The second, Swift, an aspiring politician, occurs a bit later. Each dies of a single bullet. It's up to Rutledge to search for connections that may or may not exist. When a third man is targeted but only wounded, the mystery deepens.
Rutledge is an excellent policeman whose experience and intelligence underlie a methodical and systematic approach to facts and events. Characters are complex and realistic. In addition. the reader begins to understand how WWI affected Great Britain and those who served in it. This mystery has a fascinating plot with a surprising climax when Rutledge discovers that it all began during the war itself. Good read!

Todd never lets you down! Superb in setting up scenes and dialog with an interesting background that feels like you are there in an era long gone and seldom dwelled upon.

As usual the writing carries you along. But maybe Rutledge (and the Todds) should get more sleep, because after finishing the book there were some head-scratching moments for me. Again a whopping co-incidence makes it seem fairly implausible that the reason behind the killings should have happened. Still enjoyed reading, but was disappointed at the end.
