I'm writing this review because I can't stand it currently has a two star review. Tana French is unrivaled for her skill at developing a sense of place and delivering a tight, suspenseful narrative. Unlike her other books, French picks up where her last book left off. If you have not read The Searcher you will want to read it before you dive into The Hunter. The story revisits Trey, Cal and their neighbors two years after the events in The Searcher. French's characters are always memorable. Trey and Cal are two of my favorites.

This book gets off to a very, very slow start familiarizing the reader with the village in Ireland where everything takes place. Once the real action gets started, though, the plot moves quickly and with suspenseful complications.

As far as I can remember, I did not read the first novel in this series but I followed the action fine.

The dynamics of small-town insularity and the distinctive Irish dialogue in this book are both superb.
