This is a great paranormal romance. It is a keeper, for me. I find myself rereading certain sections. Emma is half Valkyrie/half Vampire, raised in a Valkyrie coven, sheltered. She grows up insecure about herself, among her sisters. Then she encounters Laclain, her lifemate, who wants to hate her because she's Vampire. A great read.

This toss-up between a half valkyrie-half vamp and a werewolf is a far more original idea than what I've shoved un-read under my bed lately. Kresley Cole starts out the book with a chase through Paris that has us wondering if the guy is really going to catch our valkyrie-vamp or just wreck the city getting there. Although the Scottish werewolf is a bit macho for my taste and has to get over the disgust of being attracted to a vamp of any kind, the relationship between these two takes off quickly and does develop into something...well almost believable. It's a great starter for a series! 4 stars, could have been 5 but that cover...please

This is my first full length book by Cole. I've only read Myst and Wroth's story before this. I recall trying to read another short story by her but couldn't finish it because sometimes this world Cole created can be a little overwhelming (too much info and feeling a little lost). This was a really fun book.
At first I didn't find Lachlain likable, but somehow Cole manages to convert me into a Lachlain fan halfway through the book. He was definitely an idiot when if came to relationship but he learned from his mistakes which made him very endearing. I adore Emmaline whether she went ballistic or when she was being timid. She was just such a sweet, lovable character.
The plot was basically about Emma figuring out her past and coming to terms to being mated to a Lykae (sort of like a werewolf). They had to navigate through disgruntle Lykae, overprotective Valkyrie, and mastermind vampires among other things.
I liked that Cole used a little bit of humor in this story and some of the stuff was over the top. I know Myst and Wroth's story was written after this book but I am so glad I read it first. That was the problem I had with the story I couldn't get into before. It didn't provide the background I needed. Even with this story I think I would have been a little overwhelmed without reading Myst and Wroth's story first.
I enjoyed this book thoroughly and look forward to reading the rest of this series.

From the moment Lachlain senses his mate Emmaline nothing can stop him from being with her; not the vampires that have imprisoned him for well over a century, not his chained limbs, not her Valkyrie coven, and not even his devotion to the Lykae. Didn't want it to end...then started the next book in the series. Yeah! I had to re-read the series when I got book 4 Dark Needs at Nights Edge because I wasn't getting into book 4. I couldn't remeber the dynamics between all the characters. I was going to skim the first 4 books (including prequel in Playing Hard to Get) but I am reading word for word and enjoying it more the second time. This is the best in the series. I can't imagine going through what Emma went through but she rocked.

Kresley Cole was my first paranormal romance and she has definately ruined me for any other author. This is the first book in her ongoing Immortals After Dark series, and there is no doubt that A Hunger Like No Other will curl your toes for days after reading. Kresley definately stands alone in this genre. She's an artist, deftly balancing humor, action, drama and erotica in a truly original plot. All my friends agree that they couldn't put it down so you're in for a wild ride.
If your a romance addict and a fan of vampires, werewolves, and other dark fantastical creatures, this series is for you. Kresley leaves litte to the imagination and uses modern terminology which I absolutely LOVE about her writing. I have read others and some series' were quite good, but I'm always anxiously waiting for Kresley Cole, the Master! Enjoy!!

A lycae (werewolf) tortured for for a very long time breaks free only to find the mate he smells near. Now with a mate that is all wrong for him, one of his enemy no less, he must convince her to stay with him. Emma starts out a timid half vampire/half Valkyrie, and soon grows into her own skin as her love grows for her mate.
I started this book like most others, expecting it to be just alright, I would read it and then put it on the shelf and forget about it. Nope, didn't happen. After the first chapter I was so hooked I skipped dinner and continued reading in one straight shot all the way through. There is so much going on in this book, but it is amazing. It has a sweet new twist on the whole mythological creature genre. It also has a bit of the Carpathian feel with the bonding and mating, but that's ok...it wasn't the same at all. It was a wonderful book...oh, and so freaking hot there is practically steam coming off the pages.

This book officially started my obsession with Cole. The intensity of Cole's characters start from the very beginning with Lachlain ripping his own leg off because he smells HER. The single minded focus of Lachlain in this book makes for a great read. Emma's character growth from timid to, well, so as not to ruin anything we'll just say not-so-timid is a entertaining romp that keeps you turning pages. My only complaint is the sleep i lost unable to put it down.

Got this book because a very good friend recommended it and I am glad that I listened to her. I love the world that Kresley Cole has created with her characters. Lachlain, King of the Lykae, is on the brink of madness after being tortured for a very long time and finds the strength to escape only after scenting his mate. Once freed he finds that Emma is not what he expected his mate to be in anyway. Emma is an unlikely heroine, unsure of herself and through many trials finds her strength. Lachlain fights off the madness and sees that the mate fate has chosen for him is in fact the perfect fit for him.

Although, I mainly stick to historical, I wanted to try something different. I got it with this book, a page turner and I enjoyed every minute of it.
Loved this story. It's a keeper for me. Immortals After Dark series is shaping up to be one of my favorite paranormal series. It's almost as good as the Black Dagger Brotherhood by JR Ward and I thought nothing could come close to my love for the BDB series. A Hunger Like No Other started off with one of the most intense and weirdly romantic things I've read in quite some time. I can't believe the lengths the hero went to after he caught the scent of his mate in a crowded Paris street. The heroine started off as weak and very unsure of herself. She was annoying in the beginning, but over time grew to be the type of heroine I like - confident, loving, and very sure of herself. I didn't find the hero too overbearing, but he is obviously dominant and very much an alpha male. It's also very clear he loves her and is protective of her. This book is a keeper.

Lachlain Mac Rieve is a Lykae who escapes the fires of hell after enduring 15 decades of torture. What sets him off is the scent of his mate above him, Emmaline. Half vampire, half Valkyrie, Emmaline is sooo not what Lachlain expects for a mate. Another great one by cole that makes you laugh till the end; Lachlain's & Emmaline's story. Worth the read.
This book moves along at a good pace & keeps your interest, but there are times when you feel as if you were plunked down into a new world without a guidebook. You learn more & more as the book progresses, but for the first half I felt like I wasn't getting the whole picture because I didn't know enough about the Valkyries, the Lykae Clan & the whole Lore community.
I will read the next on in the series because by the end you received a lot more information & the characters were very interesting. It grabbed me enough that I want to know what happens to the others so I consider that a win bookwise.
I do recommend this but just warn that you have to push through a bit in the first half. The end whips by & you won't want to put it down!

This is the first book, not novella, of Immortals After Dark, in English. It is hard to get information on this ISBN as it is from a German/UK publisher but this edition is a Trade Paperback in English.
This is a great book. Look for it under the US pub. for lots of reviews. The heroine has been babied and secluded all her life. She becomes empowered and anything but a helpless creature. At first she becomes captured by a Werewolf (OK, not exactly Werewolf but Lakae) who has decided that she is his mate. Only problem, she is a vampire and he HATES vampires. He's been "away" for a couple of centuries and lost in the technology, even cars. So it starts out with mistreatment due to his bigotry and turns into empowerment for her to go out on her own.
I really like the story and characters, great characters. The next two books in the series were even better. One of the best paranormal romance series, arguably the best.

As the first book of the series there is a lot of series setup stuff. There were some shifts to show what Emmaline's aunts were up to and references to certain players who I think will probably either get their own books or show up later. This set up felt like it was unnecessary to the story but I did like reading about Emma's aunts. The uniqueness of the different factions of the supernatural world Cole creates was a positive for me, but I get a hint be that in later books she introduces more and more species. Not sure I'd like that. This book ended up being in the "ok" category for me. While I liked the concept of the Lykae and the Valkyrie, certain scenes and some of the humor, I didn't really warm to the hero who I thought acted like a big jerk for much of the book and never really pays for it enough, the "one and only mate" aspect always feels like a cheat, and the Scottish brogue (ken, tae, lass, no') I could have done without.
Acclaimed authour Kresley Cole introduces a sizzling new series with this tale of a fierce werewolf and a bewitching vampire - unlikely soul mates whose passion will test the boundaries of life and death.

I read a lot of paranormals and this one was refreshingly original. Although.. the Valkyries did put me in mind a bit of McKenyon's Dark Hunters. Not sure if this was the first of the series/group, but several characters were introduced that you'd want to know more about. I hope there are more great books to come my way. I haven't been this captivated for awhile.
I am a huge fan of paranormals. I don't mind a little (or even sometimes, a lot) of sex in the books I read. I picked this book up because it's had so many great reviews, but after two chapters of the heroine basically being terrorized and molested by the "hero" (including him telling her that he would rape her if he weren't feeling so weak, and forcing her to take a shower with him while he fondled her), I put it aside. The story was making me feel physically sick. I'm glad it's wishlisted here, since that means I'll be getting it out of my house asap.
I wasn't too impressed with this book. It has an unsympathetic hero and a slightly annoying heroine. The conflict felt a little contrived and the writing is clunky in places. However, it's worth reading to set up the sequel - which is a very good book.

I enjoyed this story. The first part had some near-forced touching/near sex scenes that I wasn't sure which way things would go but their relationship develops and was a good story overall. I wish I'd know about the 'From the Book of Lore' section at the end of the story/before the previews because it tells about the different paranormal elements and their 'basics'.I had no idea what a valkyrie was and it took a while to figure it out and still wasn't too sure til near the end! Anyways, was a sexually tense story(came close several times yet was teasing in taking a while to get there)overall a good read and I plan on reading more in the series though I usually prefer lighter vampire/shapeshifter romances without so much confusion about terminology!

By and large Sherrilyn Kenyon & JR Ward own this type of Series; but Kresley Cole runs a close 2nd. Despite the chessey front cover, it is a pretty good book. Further in the series the stories get better, but its a nice slow introduction into the world of Lore.

A Hunger Like No Other really sucked me in. The plot and characters weren't incredibly compelling, but still I could not put the book down.
Sometimes a story can just grab you and this one did. I found Em and Lachlain's world and relationship fascinating.
He was terrible to her in the beginning, but you have to consider his state of mind and the how the vampires treated him. He's deeply sorry later in the book and if Em can forgive him, so can I.
While it was a little cruder than many other romance novels I've read and the word shaft was used way too many times, I found the book very enjoyable and look forward to reading the rest in the series.

This author has received a lot of hype and I just don't see it after reading this book. I'm not sure if I'm going to bother with the rest of the series.
It was a good book, maybe not one of my best own books but good. It was an easy read.

Hot, spicy read. I was hoping it would be a keeper for me, but it isn't. I liked it a lot but the emotional intensity wasn't quite there and the end had too much action that detracted from the romance.

I'd never heard of this author before, and I picked up this book off of an FOL sale table simply because I like paranormals. I wasn't really sure what to expect.
I LOVED this book! There was so much action I was never bored, and there was great tension and steaminess between the main characters! I didn't want to put it down. I will definitely read more by this author.

Re-reading...
What do you do when those who know you best call you "Emma the Timid"; and they're right! Emma is half Vampire and half Valkyrie and raised by the Valkyries. She is on her own for the first time only to have it all go wrong - first she can't find the information she's looking for, the blood dealer she's using disappears, and then she's kidnapped by an immortal, half-insane Lykae [werewolf] who says she's his lifemate... Captured by vampires and tortured for years has driven Lachlain mad. At last he escapes and tracks down his lifemate, only to find she is half vampire which makes him worse.
Although he never truly harms her; his erratic, violent behavior terrifies her. What does do is lie to her. He promises to let her return to her family after they get to Scotland but really plans to keep her. Her family hates 'his kind' and his people hate hers. But there IS that animal attraction...
The bad vampires successfully steal her away to use in THEIR nefarious plots. Although Lachlain races to the rescue - Emma rescues herself and earns her own page in the Valkyrie book of heroes. The families agree to tolerate each other - barely.
Enjoyable read - this is the first novel in the series but there is a short story [prequel] in Playing Easy to Get you should track it down. Lots of action - some of it between the sheets. Fair warning - there's enough mythological terminology that the author included a glossary in the back.
Another series where order is very important...

I didn't like this book as much as I thought that I would. Having read most of the paranormal romance books on the market these days, this one was greatly lacking in story line compared to the others out there. It was full of unresolved conflict and not enough of a plot to explain it.
