This book is written in journal form which starts in 1923 at Oxford. The journal entries are short but full of tales of lovers, art thieves, war and spies. The book travels throughout the world and throughout history until 1991. I was pleasingly surprised at how much I enjoyed this book.

I read this after seeing the Masterpiece Theater production on TV (which I enjoyed). If anything, the book is even better. It is written in an autobiographical style and spans several decades in the life of the narrator, Logan Mountstuart, a writer by profession, who rubs shoulders with many famous contemporaries on his life's journey. If you are drawn like I am to WWII London, British Intelligence, the monarchy, the literary world of the 1940's and 50's, and stories of great romance and great sorrow, I think you'll like this book.
I am not given to being overly effusive but the writing in this book is brilliant. Presented in journal format, this tory is life itself with all its gaps, surprises and let downs bundled in everyday thought. Read it!
