Before picking up this book, I'd never heard of Hudson Taylor. I enjoyed learning about a man who would leave everything he knew to help a group of people he knew little about. I thought it was fascinating that, during his first trip to China, he tried to help the Chinese addicted to opium (since it was a problem created by his countrymen in England). However, he obviously lacked the training or gravitas (he did not have his doctor's degree at that time) to make a difference and he had to close the facility.

Hudson must have been an inspiring speaker because he seemed to do more good as a recruiter for missionaries to go to China. His own efforts were somewhat limited by his medical problems and those of his family. One outstanding problem the missionaries faced was the Boxer Rebellion. These Chinese went after anything and anyone who wasn't traditional Chinese. They were the cause of 20,00 deaths; they even killed many Chinese converts.

By the end, Hudson had made 11 trips to China; he died there soon after his arrival. He is considered to be one of the greatest Christian missionaries. It seems, through the eyes of this book, that people who met him were in awe of his sincerity and clear love for others. This was a very interesting story, partly because there are so few stories about the many successful people who put their faith in God and help others as missionaries. On the downside, I didn't think this book was as clear as it could have been about Hudson's traveling. Overall score = 4.5 stars
