At a time when concerns for a family member, the pandemic, gas prices, the economy, and world peace weigh heavy on my mind, it was a welcome relief to escape into a heartfelt memoir for a few hours.

How to Stitch An American Dream is written by Jenny Doan, founder of the Missouri Star Quilt Company and "the most famous quilter in the world." I'm not a quilter, but I wanted to learn more about the author whose strong faith and fierce love of family led to the creation of a quilting empire in a small Midwestern town.

In this memoir, Jenny (I can't imagine she allows anyone to call her Mrs. Doan) shares stories about her childhood, her marriage to Ron, and the growth of their large family and the hardships they overcame.

The last quarter of the book outlines the birth of her "little shop" that began with a single long-arm quilting machine and is now the largest quilting supply vendor in the US. Jenny is a "sewlebrity" and YouTube star with countless quilting tutorials that have more than 210 million views.

The Doans are âsalt of the earth" people whose personal and business decisions are heavily influenced by their Christian faith. Jenny infuses humor into every aspect of life and is so genuine in sharing her life story.

I highly recommend reading this title via audiobook, which Jenny reads in her folksy and sincere style. Listening felt like chatting with her over a mug of tea, and its 5-hour length makes it very accessible.
