What a disappointment! Two stars!
I really enjoyed two of the last three Courtesan books, and certainly liked all of them well enough to read the whole series.
Probably 80% of the story takes place over the course of a single day. I felt like the author's whim to have so much happen in a day caused a lot of breaks in the action and development of the characters. There were endless boring drawing room scenes with characters walking around talking to each other but little happening in terms of progressing either character development or plot.
Not much happens in this book and although you have learned to like Iveston in previous books, I don't think much was really revealed about his character in this story. I didn't think the romantic build-up was very well done and the overuse of wagering on who marries whom and girls getting "ruined" to secure husbands - ugh. I liked it all in previous books but this book was just one long wager and too too too much repetition repetition.
We were introduced to a bunch of new characters, rehashed some old characters, I presume setting up more books. And there was some development, and revelation, about Sophia's past and her possible future with Lord Ruan. If anything, her relationship with Ruan would keep me reading.
Sensuality rating of this book was just about PG. Compared to the other books, all of which are very tame, this book was very very prim. Some kissing, a little petting. It doesn't have to be all sex, but the lack of showing the love was yet another let down.
I have the 5th book already, so I guess I'll be reading it, but I think I am finished with this series.
