The beauty to which How Beautiful We Were by Imbolo Mbue refers is the beauty of the land and community. The "were" is the crux of this book for the land and the community have been overrun by corporate interests. The story conveys the sense of tragedy. I do, however, find myself losing the specific story thread in the shifting narrators and the generic way of referring to collective groups. I logically understand the sadness. I am not entirely sure I walk away feeling it.
