this was just ok. The characters were good, but the plot/story line were just ok. The ending seemed a little rushed.

An amazing book influenced by two true stories linked together to form an exciting tale seamlessly told in alternating chapters.

It's really two love stories: Anna lives in San Francisco in 2010 with her beloved 94 year old grandfather Max. Max asks her to go to Germany to "Schloss Siegel", a manor home formally owned by his family. He begs her to find something he hid there before he fled the country years before.

The book is really Max's story, the son of an aristocratic family who favored the Nazi Regime and how he fell in love with Isabelle, the granddaughter of a infamous courtesan, known for having famous lovers. Max and Isabelle meet in 1934 Paris, and are instantly attracted.

The love story between Max and Isabelle was all engrossing and I couldn't put the book down. The ending is sad and I cried for the loss of true love and for the many who fled their homes in fear.
