A stand-alone, so don't expect any of her series regulars to show up. Otherwise, solid Jance.

This is my first Jance book but it won't be my last. If you like Hillerman you will like this story. Inserted in a very good story are paragraphs of Indian lore that are interesting. Very good mystery about an old Indian woman, Diana and her son who come together in the face of a tragedy.

this book was my introduction to J. A. Jance. the story was well written, the characters were believable and i really cheered for them. it's a suspenseful story intermingled with native american legends and lore. very well written.

J. A. Jance's Kiss of the Bees is the followup to this story.

I liked Jance's other series starters more at the begining, but by the end I was hooked again by Jance's characterizations and her pacing of the story. Many threads wove together nicely for this thrilling murder mystery.

My first JA Jance book. I live between Tucson and Bisbee. I really like the plot and pan to read more. The reason I didn't give it a 5 is because the switch from present to past confused me momentarily. I also didn't understand the insertions of Indian folklore.

JJ Jance is a very strong writer. This is not one of her series, but still good/recommended.

I was disappointed in this book by J. A. Jance. I do so enjoy her books about Joanna Brady, but this one is entirely different with much grittier crime scenes. If you enjoy that, then you would probably enjoy this. The story itself was good, especially the family's story & the closeness of the boy and his nanny. I loved the interactions with their dog.

This is a suspense novel. A gripping thriller which is a follow-up on "Kiss of the Bees" The killer in that book, goes after the teacher on a reservation who put him away for 6 years for the torture-murder of a young girl.

The brillant psychopath Andrew Carlisle spent only six years in prison for the brutal torture-murder of a young girl of the Tohono O'otham tribe. The testimony of Diana Ladd-a teacher on the reservation-put Crisle behind bars, and now she can't ignore the dark, mystical signs that say a predator has returned to prowl the Arizona desert. From Publishers Weekly: "Drawing on Native American life and lore as it describes the hunt for the killer of a Papago Indian girl, Jance's contemporary novel delivers suspense through rich layers of flashbacks and gritty characterization." Copyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc.
First in the Diana Ladd series, the first Non-Beaumont series.

J.A. Jance never disappoints me, whether it's a Brady novel, a Beaumont novel, or this one, with an entirely different lead character. She pays careful attention to the details of the Native legends, and does a lot of research for her stories.

If you like J.A. Jance you'll like this one. My particular copy is a discarded libary copy with the ISBN listed as posted but the cover doesn't match exactly. Mine is black with an Iguana on it and the name is green not yellow.

This is an interesting book in that we know who the killer is but we're not sure how it will all come together in the end. The story takes place in the late 1970s/early 1980s and it's a little difficult to remember that, what with living in today's society of cell phones and instant access to everything. Still, I enjoyed reading about the Indian tribes of the area, their stories, and I especially loved the descriptions of the Tucson and Phoenix areas, having visited there a few times on vacation and falling in love with the desert. A good book overall, even if I wanted to slap the main character (Diana Ladd) because of being so stupid sometimes.

very interesting facts.

I'll be in the minority with a 1* rating--that is because this book is about 200 pages too long, if you take out all the unnecessary descriptions you'd have a reasonable book and a tighter story, but this writing is over the top with just too much description, you have to read 10 pages of description then the story will move an inch, then another 10 pages of description then the story moves another inch--not my kind of writing

I'm not saying it isn't good but for me the writing style is horrible
