Three young men gunning for action rob a minimart in a sleepy suburb north of Los Angelos. When things get out of control, and with the police on their tail, they flee the scene and invade a home in an exclusive gated community, taking a panicked family hostage.
Police chief Jeff Talley finds an all-too-familiar scene in front of the house where the criminals are holed up with a father and his two children. A former hostage negotiator with the LAPD's SWAT unit, Talley is quickly thrown back into the high pressure world that he has so desperately tried to leave behind. But Talley's nightmare has barely begun, because this isn't just any house, it holds the dirty secrets of L.A.'s biggest crime lord. And the people inside aren't the only ones held hostage...
My first Robert Crais book and I really liked it, would definately read another one of his books.

Robert Crais is the best...I like the Elvis Cole series better but this is a good read.

Surprisingly good! A series of errors leads three young men who try to rob a convenience store into a fiasco involving SWAT teams, the FBI, organized crime and a kidnapping. Not my normal read but I was drawn in with it's fast pace.

I enjoyed this very much. Compelling characterizations (better than what one typically expects for this genre) and a tightly plotted story. If you're like me, and put off by Bruce Willis movies (he starred in the film version of this novel), don't let that stop you from reading this book. Recommended!

If you've seen the movie don't be put off. This was an excellent book by a very talented writer. I lost a lot of sleep because I couldn't put it down. Full of tension, pressure and dirty secrets. I was furious to see what they had done when I saw the movie!

The New York Times reviewer calls it 'criminally entertaining'. I loved Crais's other police procedurals, too.

I saw the movie (starring Bruce Willis and Kevin Pollack) before I read the book and actually like the movie more. Here's a literal quote of the synopis from the back cover: In a sleepy suburb north of Los Angeles, a convenience-store robbery turns violent. With the police on their tail, three criminals flee the scene and invade a home in an exclusive gated community, taking captive a panicked father and his two children. Police chief Jeff Talley, a former hostage negotiator with the LAPD's SWAT unit, is now thrown back into the high-pressure world that he has so desperately tried to leave behind. But Talley's nightmare has barely begun, because this isn't just any house; it holds the dirty secrets of L.A.'s biggest crime lord. And the people inside aren't the only ones being held hostage...

Crais is becoming more ambitious with every outing,

In making a movie out of this book, you could either make it a real good comedy or a really good suspense movie: You have some ex-cons (not too bright) that rob a store and then their truck breaks down. They climb the fence in a gated community and then break into a house with a family inside. The boy in the family has secret passages in the house, sister only has on a bikini, and the father. Did I mention that he is an accountant? He is, but it's for one of the biggest mob bosses on the West coast. He has all the records plus loads of cash in the house (millions!) The cop in charge is an ex-LAPD SWAT hostage negotiator. Also, one of the ex-cons? He just happens to be a cannibalistic serial killer. Strange sounding, but the book is really good! Enjoy!

This was a pretty good read. I found it interesting that each section was told thru a different character's eyes. Not an "edge of your seat" type of read, but still good.
