In Horus Rising the characters that Dan Abnett creates feel very real. While the book is specifically about the Warhammer 40k fiction it also tackles complex and disturbing themes such as science versus spirituality, righteousness in war, and justice versus the sanctity of brotherhood.

You don't really have to know anything about the Warhammer 40k universe to enjoy this book. It's well written and a surprisingly good read!

It is the 31stmillennium. Under the benevolent leadership of the Immortal Emperor the Imperium of man has stretched out across the galaxy. It is a golden age of disscovery and conquest.
But now,on the eve of victory, the emperor leaves the front lines, entrusting the great crusade to his favourite son, Horus, Promoted to Warmasterer, can the idealistic Horus carry out the Emperors grand plan, or will this promotion sow the seeds of heresy amongst his brothers?..A galactic civil war that threatened to bring about the extinction of humanity.
