A servant's form He meekly wears, And sojourns in a house of clay.1' B... more »efore anything more is said of Jesus in the Bible, we are told of the appearance of another wonderful person, John the Baptist. This man was the son of Zacharias, a good and holy priest, who served God in the Temple at Jerusalem. He and his wife Elizabeth were old people, and had no child, until after the angel of God had one day appeared to Zacharias as he was burning incense in the Temple of the Lord. This angel stood on the right side of the altar of incense. " And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear came upon him." It seems that Zacharias had long prayed for a child, for " the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias; for thy prayer is heard, and thy wife Elizabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John." This name John, means the gift, the grace and mercy of the Lord, and this their son was to be, for he was to preach to the people, telling them to repent of their sins, and was thus " to make ready a people prepared for the Lord." You must read in your Bibles all that is said about the birth of John, and what he did, and you will then see that he was like what our preachers and ministers are ; only John preached to the people about repentance, and faith in Christ's first coming, and our ministers preach faith in Jesus who has come, and repentance of sins, that we may be ready for Christ's second coming in glory. You can read all about John the Baptist's preaching in the third chapter of St. Luke'sGospel, and you will see how multitudes flocked to hear him, and to be baptized by him.
