Stewart's retelling of the Arthurian legend, from Merlin's viewpoint, takes the story to the point of Arthur being named king after Uther's death. It's still marred by a glacial pace and by Stewart's insistence that Merlin is just a mortal man . . . Who has visions, foresees the future, and controls several types of fire.
The best thing I can tell you is, if you like J.R.R Tolkien, you will love this. It has a slow beginning, which can tend to push a reader away, but if you hang in there, it is well worth it. There are many tasks and obstacles that Merlin and his apprentice must overcome, with an action packed conclusion.
The classic second book in the Arthur legend, told with Merlin as the centerpeice. A must read for lovers of the Arthurian cycle.

Merlin helps Arthur become King of all Britain
I thoroughly enjoyed this book 20 years ago and reading it, with its predecessor, The Crystal Cave, and reading them again has been a joy. Mary Stewart wrote a fabulous series. I would recommend it to any fan of Merlin and the Arthurian Legend.
Second book in Stewart's Merlin series. Excellent.
