This was the first time I understood Washington the man, as well as the president. I came to know him and respect him more as a real person, with hopes, fears, and ideals. He was truly a remarkable man, and this book captured what I think was the true essence of who he really was.

A thorough examination of the man first in war, first in peace and first in the hearts of his countrymen. I love biographies and this one was well done. An examination of the first 'American' and the ideals that led him to accept the leadership of the patriots' army, the Continental Congress and finally our first president. Some high ideals were held, but the ability to reconcile his ideals with the realities of the world in which he lived.

Well organized and easy to read.
