Great story. The writing could have been a little better, but the actual story made up for any literary faults.
This is the best account of a battle in Vietnam that I've ever read, and I've read numerous books on the subject. It is extremely intense and descriptive.
An excellent presentation of raw heroism, the bonds of comradeship, self-sacrifice, and the dedication of U.S. marines to country, Corps, and their ideals.
This is a marvelous read which should have been presented to the American public long before this book was published but for media political bias.
If you are interested in what the U.S. Marines are, read this.

Shawn S. writes "This is the best account of a battle in Vietnam that I've ever read," and I have to agree with him.
I remember reading about this action when it happened, soon after I finished my first year of college. Yet, until today I never read about the story in detail.
Almost exactly three and one half years later, I was a brand new Marine lieutenant who would also serve in Viet Nam. Despite my experience in that conflict I still find this story unbelievable.
