Not my favorite. It's a little dark for my taste. The heroine has been abused by her late husband and is working through the related issues as she meets and becomes acquainted with the hero. While I know these issues are important, I like a "happier" storyline. Because of the issues, however, it is very unique and not typical for ranney or romances in general. While I won't read it again, it was due to personnal preference and not problems with characters or plots.
Karen Ranney is one of my favorite authors and I have even enjoyed some of her scarred characters in the past, but this is *the* MOST DEPRESSING BOOK I HAVE EVER READ!! =(
One of the best of Ranney's of late! Not the usual formula. The reality of the lives of women of that century are dealt with more honestly in this book than the hundreds of romanticized versions of "strong, in control" women which we so often read in historical romances. I really liked the hero and heroine and appreciated this very interesting and compelling book!
