Hide and Seek
Author: Jack Ketchum
I don't believe in omens, but I think you can know when you're in trouble. Thus begins Jack Ketchum's riveting second novel Hide and Seek. It's a book about games. Reckless, dangerous games. Games you might even want to play yourself if you're with the right people. But shouldn't. Not ever. Dead River's a sleepy little town on the coast of Maine...  more »

Another good book finished up today. My first by Jack Ketchum even though he's been recommended to me by many people over the years. Hide and Seek starts off slow, but interesting. For most of the book I really had no idea where Ketchum was headed, but nonetheless it held my interest greatly. There was just enough tension of knowing something was going to happen, just not what. A few times, we were led down blind alleys and I thought, "Here we go..." only to realize soon, "whoops...that's not where we were supposed to be headed..."

Once we got to where we were going, the title became clear and I knew I was in for a ride. The atmosphere filled with tension and I found myself literally sitting on the edge of my seat while reading. Conclusion was satisfying, yet darker than I imagined it would be, with just enough resolutions to make me happy, yet a few unanswered questions that left me thinking about the book the rest of the evening. Very good and I'll likely be back to read more Ketchum.

For as much as I enjoy horror books today, I need to stop going back and reading older books. The early books written by authors don't have the same kick and are too mild.
This book was all character build up and blah, blah story. The second half had me skimming pages just to skip the overly detailed descriptions of EVERYTHING and just get on with the story already. Very predictable and not at all what I consider horror. Very little in the way of "blood and guts" and not even much suspense. Not anything like the Jack Ketchum I know and love today! Ok to read if you have it on hand but don't go to any trouble or expense to get it!

This was a strange story. Ordinary but kept me interested. Not at all scary or gory. Nothing bad through the whole book until the very last. Interesting is all I can really say about this book. I really liked it though.
