This is the story of an Indian man, who lives with his wife, son, mother and sister in an old crumbling house. He fears for his job, worries constantly about finances, and his duty to his family. He has many regrets and life is mostly a worrisome disappointment for him. When his daughter and her Canadian husband are killed in Canada, he brings his 7 year old granddaughter, who has never met her mother's family, home with him. Despite all this, it's a beautifully written story with many flashes of humor, beauty and humanity, with plenty of sympathetic and likeable characters.

A wonderful Story that opens you eyes to life as it is, don;t look back adn stop fretting about tomarrow, just take to day as it is... a must read
Been a long time since I've read this book but after rereading the blurb on the back, I remember really enjoying this story.
This is one of those books that you just enjoy reading...not alot of action, but lots of character development; family disowns a daughter, there is a tragic death and then they all have to deal with the aftermath. When a native of India writes in English, I find it very lyrical, and this is no exception.
I loved this book - another very good one about the Indian's immigrant life and difficulties in reconciling the old culture with the new.
