Heroes of WW II chronicles the events that earned the CMOH for many Americans during WW II. While there are many stories of solders and Marines that essentially fell on live grenades to save their buddies, there are some truly remarkable feats of heroism. For instance: one fellow after being severely wounded, was sent from the fighting in France, to a hospital in England. While there, one of the solders from his unit showed up injured, and began to recount how the unit's moral and fighting spirit had been broken. Determined to restore his unit, the young officer, sneaked out of the hospital that night and hitch-hiked all the way back to the front to retake command of his unit.
I gave this book 4 stars because there were a few things that I feel could have been done differently...for one, MAPS! I would have loved to have seen some small maps in this book. Without them, some of the troop movements seemed a little fuzzy. Also, to have seen enemy emplacements would have helped and would have done a lot to bolster what these recipients were truly up against. Another thing I would like to have seen would have been a small glossary or appendix that could have given the definition of some of the initials used, described the difference between a company and a battalion, and so forth.
Overall, a great and fun read. Highly recommended.
