Henry & Mudge books are super for early readers. This one is about Henry's parents going off to a Valentine's Sweetheart dance and his worries about having to stay with Mrs. Hopper - a neighbor across the street. He never like the way her house looks scary. Yet, when he got there, he found out is was like a palace and fell in love with her and the house. He had a super time and overcame some fears.
