The Henry and Mudge series are about right for 2nd graders, when they are almost ready for chapter books. In fact, most are divided into parts (this one has 3), so you could tell your little tyke that this a chapter book. I think these are neat because nothing really bad happens in the stories, there's never really a "problem" to be solved, but they are still entertaining (usually, it's Mudge).
