Very good book. Her husband is an attorney who goes to Kosovo and she goes with him, teaching english as a 2nd language to Kosovars. Their stories of the apartheid and war experiences and her immersement into a new and difficult culture are worth reading about. Her comment that America is really so isolated re the politics and cultures of the world is well taken.
Awesome book.
I found this travel memoir to be insightful, intelligent, and well written. Life in Kosovo, as told by a woman who lived and worked there, an insider's view.
Amazing book detailing the author's year in Kosovo. While her husband worked to develop the UN administered country's legal system, Paula taught at an English school and began a book club in which the class read The Old Man and the Sea. Just a year after NATO bombings, memories and scars of the war and ethnic cleansing carried out by the Serbs under Milsovic were fresh. Excellent read.
We read this book as a book group selection. Some thought it similar to Reading Lolita in Tehran. Either way, it was compelling and provided a perspective on life as it could be...
Great book! Provides an interesting view of an area plagued by war. Great for those of us that are not very politically-minded!
For a non-fiction, it reads quickly. It left me wondering how is Kosovo doing and if I'm lame for not knowing.
